PLEASE READ DISCLAIMERS BEFORE PURCHASING

At long last, you can finally make a Gameboy zero in a color shell! The Glitch Boy Color is an All-In-One board that lets you build your gaming system quickly, cleanly, and as easily as possible. After a few simple modifications to your shell and some very light soldering, you will have yourself a fully built gaming system you can slip in your pocket.

A quick start guide will be created before orders go out that details how to install and complete the system.

Features:

  • Safe Shutdown – Flipping the switch keeps the system powered as it automatically runs through the proper shutdown sequence, preventing SD card corruption. It then shuts off power to the system completely once the sequence is done.
  • Low-Battery Detection and Shutdown – Once the battery power starts dropping low, an orange LED will activate (located in original LED location next to screen). This will give you time to save. As the power drops lower, the system will automatically trigger the shutoff sequence to prevent SD corruption.
  • Battery Charge Indication – When the battery is plugged in and charging, a red LED will activate. Upon completion, it will turn blue. All LED indicators and detectors are located conveniently at the same location, which is in the original LED location left of the screen.
  • Clear Screen – The 320 x 240 screen used is crisp and clear. It also fits perfectly in the case; the original GBC screen protectors will completely cover the bezel (i.e. no ugly screen bezels showing through the protectors). Premade SD image will crop the overscan correctly. A small potentiomater on the back of the board allows you to adjust screen brightness. Screen will be pre-soldered to the board, so that’s one less thing for you to worry about!
  • Clear Audio – The board uses digital audio, versus PWM. Meaning you get much clearer audio quality without all the static hiss.
  • Easy Access SD Card – SD card socket has been conveniently relocated to the battery compartment for easy access.
  • Hard Rest Switch – Small tactile switch located behind the DC port opening, for emergencies. Located internally to prevent accidental press; just insert a small item like a pen to activate without having to open the shell. ONLY USE WHEN SAFE SHUTDOWN MALFUNCTIONS OR SOFTWARE STALLS.
  • Easy Solder – The pi zero footprint uses thru-hole solder points instead of pads, making it much easier to solder the pi zero to your Glitch Boy Color board. The solder points for the SD and USB locations are castellated, allowing you to solder to these pads much easier and allowing you to correct mistakes.
  • Shoulder Button Solder Points – Pads located above the pi allows easy soldering for shoulder button.  There is no shoulder button kit for this as of now. If one is developed before boards are ready to mail, they will be included for free.
  • Minimal Shell Modifications – The only shell modifications needed are simple: Drill extra button holes, remove the battery compartment, snip some tabs. That is all.
  • Full Size USB Port (optional) – Use a USB device with your PI. Cut-out location located at top of board, with the socket sitting flush with the case.
  • Silicone Switches (optional) – If you prefer to use gameboy pocket buttons, as they aren’t labeled with “A” and “B”, the included soft switches can be soldered to the board. Using the provided button spacers will allow the pocket buttons to work with the soft switches.

Future Development (untested, use at own risk):

  • ADS Module Footprint  – Solder points located on the AIO allows you to attach an ADS module to use analog devices. Certain traces will need to be broken before use, further detail to be written in quick start guide.
  • Joycon Analog Stick Connector – Joycon connector and cable cutout located in corner of the board. Connected to ADS pads.

Kit Includes:

  • AIO Glitch Boy Color Board
  • Unsoldered thru-hole components (headphone socket, USB female socket, volume wheel, hard reset switch, speaker, soft silicone switches)
  • 3D printed parts (cartridge cover, charger port cover, drill guide, button spacers)

You will need to provide your own case, buttons, pi zero, battery, and SD card.

Acknowledgements:

This project took a lot of time and i wouldn’t have been able to complete it without help. So here are some thanks, in no particular order.

  • Bluup at Blupp Labs for providing me with his retropie image, which was used as the template for this project.
  • 32Teeth who provided his screen driver that was used during the testing phases.
  • Esoteric Mods for the constant encouragement and for providing shells to test the prototypes.
  • Deadpan Robot for the board name.
  • Adafruit for providing an immense amount of open source information.
  • Wermy and the Sudomod community for being all-around awesome people.

Disclaimers:

  • All shells are made differently. I have encountered at least 5 variations. All of which still work with the board but may fit differently and may require (VERY) light sanding, cutting, or repositioning. I have tried to adjust the board to work as easily as possible with as many shells as possible. If this is an issue for you, please do not order this
  • Only 2 boards per order can be purchased. This is to keep the boards safe as they are fragile, only 2 can fit in a single box. If you want to purchase more than 2 per order, either make multiple orders (will have to pay shipping again) or email me at erikg@glitchdgaming and we can work out out shipping a larger box.
  • Please be aware of any fees your country charges for imports. I am not responsible for any fees incurred due to import.
  • When preorders close, the boards will be manufactured, shipped to me, then tested before shipping. The timeline for this will be updated here as i receive the info.
  • You can get a FULL refund of your money anytime BEFORE your order actually ships. No restocking fees, no questions, no delay. Within 24 hours of request. All I ask is that you please take the time to be sure you want the item before you order, because I take a hit on refunds. So please do so responsibly. Thank you.
